OpenAI is announcing a new AI "agent" designed to help people conduct in-depth, complex research using ChatGPT, the company's AI-powered chatbot platform.

ChatGPT can now write complex reports and cite its sources. That could free up your workers and change how you task them dramatically.

“What you get from deep research is a comprehensive, fully cited research paper, essentially something that an analyst or an expert in a field might produce to you,” OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen said during a demo of the new deep research tool.

On the heels of its o3 mini release, OpenAI announced a new ChatGPT agent for handling in-depth research. Appropriately, it's called "deep research."
