Vietnam’s trade surplus with the US widened to $123.5 billion last year, making the manufacturing powerhouse a potential prime target for President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Tariffs are a tax imposed on goods that the U.S. imports from other nations. President Donald Trump said the U.S. would impose sweeping tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China, but last-minute deals with Mexico and Canada paused those tariffs for 30 days.

The U.S. trade deficit widened sharply in December as imports surged to a record high against the backdrop of tariff threats, which might have prompted businesses to rush purchases of foreign-made goods like finished metals and computers.

Data released Wednesday morning by the Commerce Department showed that U.S. imports of goods and services grew 6.6 percent to a record $4.1 trillion, as Americans bought large amounts of auto parts, weight-loss drugs, computers and food from other countries.
