Dominique Artis was named Friday as the city of Dallas’ new top public safety official, cementing the former Dallas Fire-Rescue chief in a pivotal position overseeing police, fire, municipal court and emergency services.

This announcement will come as a surprise to few: Kimberly Bizor Tolbert has officially been named Dallas’ next city manager by the City Council in a vote of 13-2. Tolbert is the first Black woman to be named to Dallas’ top leadership role.

Leaders listed real estate permitting, homelessness and public safety as some of the issues they want the newly appointed chief executive of City Hall to focus on.
