A former federal prosecutor and Texas Republican, Ratcliffe gained prominence as a congressman as a staunch defender of Trump.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Thursday to confirm John Ratcliffe as the next CIA director, approving the second high-level appointment for the new Trump administration.

The CIA assessment, completed under the Biden administration, points the finger at China even while acknowledging “low confidence” in the conclusion. It was ordered released by new CIA chief John Ratcliffe.

The CIA on Saturday offered a new assessment on the origin of the Covid outbreak, saying the coronavirus is "more likely" to have leaked from a Chinese lab than to have come from animals. But the intelligence agency cautioned it had "low confidence" in this determination.

Cotton's pitch comes after the CIA switched its view on the origins of COVID-19 to the belief it likely originated from a Chinese lab leak.
